Movie Review - The Vow
Inspired by true events, I knew it couldn’t possibly be some sugar-coated happily ever after tale... Or could it? Best known for The Notebook and Dear John, Rachel and Channing play the ever so convincible soul mates.
The Vow was a mixture of a classic love story with defining moments of reality.
I’ve seen plenty of romantic dramas and I know it’s hard to find a genuine core in modern love stories these days, that don’t come across “cheesy”. But I think The Vow has flipped on it’s head a bit.
It’s about a young married couple that gets into a car accident. Terribly injured, Paige (McAdams) loses her memory on everything including who her husband was, Leo (Tatum). This was one of the turning points early on in the film where we start to see Leo attempting to rehash and help Paige regain her memory of her life with him. It has it’s ups and downs obviously, that’s where the reality curveball kicks in. To make his wife fall in love with him again, he eventually takes her out on a stroll through memory lane, but success was far out of reach.
Sure it sounds like it could happen to anyone. Memory lose, play the 50-first-dates type of game, attempts failed consecutively. However, because this was inspired by a true story, the ending was like no other. Falling in love twice with the same person in a new life (in her eyes), that’s got to be some kind of miracle, right? What stuck out to me was how she slowly got back to her daily life routines without the 24/7 help and without the pressure.
Overall, it was more heartbreaking than heartwarming.
Oh and did I mention, the guy from Jurassic Park (Sam Neill) plays the father of Paige who has an evil bone? It was kind of funny to see him play the a-hole.
