Meryl Streep on The Iron Lady: "It's not a biopic"

At the New York premiere of The Iron Lady, Meryl Streep hit the red carpet to talk to press about the film.
"There really isn't any kind of role like this because we've never had a female Prime Minister in the Western World. Ever. This character is unusual but what's not unusual is the point of view from which the film looks at that life. It's her point of view. It's a very subjective look at a very big life but it is a look back from the weighing of edge of power. It's a look back of power from the point of view of powerlessness. It's not a biopic. It's not a documentary, a chronicle of those years. It is a very selective look at certain challenges that an old lady remembers based on the challenges that she faces in her daily life."
The Iron Lady is a film about UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher, and opens in select theatres December 30 before opening nationwide in January.
